Toronto Kiwanis Boys & Girls Clubs & Cabbagetown Youth Centre Merger

Published September 10, 2020 16:59

September 10, 2020 - Toronto Kiwanis is very excited to announce that we are currently exploring a merger with the Cabbagetown Youth Centre (CYC).

With the generous support of the Kiwanis Club of Toronto (KCT) and the Kiwanis Club of Toronto Foundation (KCTF), the Toronto Kiwanis Boys and Girls Clubs (TKBGC) and CYC are working together to ensure CYC programs and services, including Boxing Club activities, continue to be available to the community for many years to come.

TKBGC, in partnership with the KCT and KCTF, have a 100-year history of providing quality programs and services to the Regent Park, Cabbagetown, Moss Park, Leslieville, and Trinity Bellwoods communities. We are extremely excited about this potential merger with the CYC and look forward to expanding our services to many other communities across Toronto while continuing to delivery many of the programs the CYC families have been accessing for decades.

The Cabbagetown Youth Centre (CYC) was founded in 1972 as the Cabbagetown Boxing Club to provide at-risk youth with positive alternatives through sport and recreation, while encouraging ongoing education. Over the past 45 years, the CYC has expanded to meet the growing needs of the community to provide a complete range of recreational, social, educational, and skill development programs for ages ranging from newborns to seniors, while maintaining a specific focus on at-risk children and youth. CYC’s mandate is to provide barrier-free access to a full range of programs otherwise not available to some of the most marginalized and high-need children, youth and families through the support and creation of sustainable programming to respond to gaps in services and combat risk factors.

Since founded by the Kiwanis Club of Toronto in 1921, the Toronto Kiwanis Boys and Girls Clubs has been dedicated to working with and enhancing the lives of children, youth and their families. We provide the building-blocks for creating healthy, and civically engaged young people. Children and youth participate in challenging activities that encourage healthy living, personal growth, learning and community involvement. We build self-esteem through supportive adult mentors and engaging activities that challenge and enrich the mind, body, and spirit of each young person. Programs and activities are centered on Learning and Literacy, Cooking and Nutrition, Physical Activity, Creative Arts, and Personal Development.

A merger between TKBGC and CYC is a natural fit. Both organizations operate with similar missions and strive to deliver quality programming for children and youth in communities where a wide range of barriers often prevent access to quality service.

As we continue to explore the merger process, much of the detail remains confidential. We expect to be able to make further announcements and provide more specific detail in the very near future!
